Borussia Dortmund are reportedly in advanced talks to sign Chelsea youngster during the January transfer window.

In a previous article, we reported that one of Chelsea’s academy players was open to a loan move in January, however, Chelsea would only approve the move if a long-term contract extension was signed.

The academy graduate’s current contract expires in June 2025 after Chelsea recently activated a 12-month extension clause.

It was thought that Chelsea were keen to maintain their asset by sealing his future with a new agreement, however, with this move now appearing imminent, thing’s may have changed in recent weeks.

Maatsen recently spoke about his lack of playing time – saying that he is “keeping his options open” and is aware that a “difficult decision” may have to be made if the situation does not change.

Reported by BILD, it is believed that the move is now in the advanced stages, but confirmation on whether it’s a loan or permanent deal remains to be seen.

UPDATE:

As per @BenJacobs on X, further information has been provided on the sort of deal that may take place.

“Chelsea open to permanently selling Ian Maatsen providing they receive a similar package to the £31.5m deal they accepted from Burnley over the summer. Maatsen didn’t want the move having impressed at Chelsea in pre-season.”

“Borussia Dortmund keen, but asked for an initial loan.”

“Need for sales is obviously to help finance a striker or centre-back, but Chelsea conscious they need to manage squad numbers as well.”
