On this day in 2023…
On this day one year ago Chelsea completed the signing of Noni Madueke from PSV. The English U-21 winger became Chelsea’s 6th signing of the month, at the time.
Upon signing for the blues Madueke told the clubs website, “I’m really pleased to sign with one of the best clubs in the world in Chelsea.”
Madueke has found his start to life at Stamford Bridge a difficult one, playing under 3 coaches (excluding Bruno) in his first year as a blue. His debut came in the 0-0 draw to Fulham at Stamford Bridge.
After three successive matches, Madueke soon found himself on the bench, partly because he was not registered to feature in the Champions League for the blues – Registration rules meant only a maximum of three could make the cut.
After not making the squad during Lampard’s first two matches in charge, Madueke was given a run of seven games in a row to take us to the end of the season. In that time Noni scored his first goal for Chelsea in the eventual defeat to Arsenal.
Under Pochettino, Madueke’s game time has been a struggle, to the point reports emerged that the former Tottenham academy graduate was beginning to consider his future.
Since the beginning of the season, Madueke has only started 2 matches in the Premier League, the home defeat to Brentford which he was unlucky not to score in and the 3-2 away win to Luton which he did score in.
On the eye his fortunes look to be changing for the better but the data suggests he has a lot to do still to make it consistently at Stamford Bridge.
