On this day in 2021…
Three years ago today, the Chelsea manager cycle continued at Stamford Bridge. As Frank Lampard departed, Thomas Tuchel was confirmed as the new Chelsea head coach on this day 3 years ago.
Tuchel’s opening quotes in his first press conference set the tone. He kept his word, saying “We will build a team that nobody wants to play against.”
Thomas Tuchel’s first game ended in a 0-0 draw at home to Wolves. Just a few days later the German won his first game in charge with the blues beating Burnley 2-0 at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea eventually finished 4th in the Premier League which included victories against Liverpool and Manchester City, both away from home. Tuchel led Chelsea to both the final of the FA Cup and Champions League in his opening 4 months. Chelsea went onto lose the FA Cup in controversial circumstances.
Tuchel wrote himself into Chelsea history on May 29th 2021, the club won the Champions League for a 2nd time after beating Manchester City 1-0 in Porto. Silverware continued to flow as the blues won the UEFA Super Cup for the first time under Roman Abramovich, beating Europa League winners Villarreal on penalties.
Tuchel’s final trophy as Chelsea head coach was the 2021 (played in 2022) FIFA Club World Cup in Abu Dhabi. Roman Abramovich and Chelsea completed the set. A couple of weeks after the Club World Final, Chelsea lost to Liverpool on penalties in the Carabao Cup final.
Just a month after the Club World Cup final, Roman Abramovich announced he was selling Chelsea with the club placed under Government sanctions. Tuchel once again showed why he was a perfect ambassador for the club telling the media ahead of Chelsea’s trip to Lille in the Champions League, “We can go by plane. If not, we go by train. If not, we go by bus. If not, I drive a seven-seater.”
Chelsea crashed out of the Champions League in heartbreaking fashion, losing to Real Madrid in extra-time despite having a 3-0 (4-3) lead at the Bernabeu. The heartbreak wasn’t over as Chelsea once again lost to Liverpool on penalties, this time in the FA Cup final.
As the Todd Boehly/Clearlake ownership took shape, Thomas Tuchel was sacked on September 7th 2022 following Chelsea’s 1-0 defeat to Dinamo Zagreb.
Graham Potter took charge shortly after.
Tuchel on his ‘lucky shoe’- ‘I wanted to leave it in Porto actually, but two players took it out of the bin in the locker room and said I have to wear it again when we reach another Champions League final. I said I would think about it,so now it is in my garage.’ [chelseafc] #CFC pic.twitter.com/DrYPYHkAsH
