The Premier League is currently in the middle of its annual winter break.

With Chelsea chasing European football next season despite a difficult start, Opta have updated their supercomputer estimations on where the blues will finish.

As the season progresses Chelsea’s hopes of a top 4 or a top 5 finish were starting to fade. In October, Opta had the blues at a 0.5% chance of making top 4, that dropped to 0.4% at the beginning of December.

As the festive fixtures have now been accounted for, the latest percentages have been released. Opta at the beginning of the month had Chelsea having just a 0.2% chance of reaching 4th place.

Following Chelsea’s 1-0 win over Fulham with all of Newcastle, Man Utd and Tottenham dropping points, Opta’s Season Simulator now has Chelsea at a 0.3% chance of a Top 4 finish. An increase of 0.1%.

With 5th potentially being enough for a Champions League spot, the hopes of finishing in that position have risen from 0.9% to 1.7%.

In total according to Opta, there is a 2% chance we see Champions League nights at Stamford Bridge, that is up from the 1.1% estimation at the beginning of the month.

As for the other European places, Opta place Chelsea at a 5.1% chance of 6th, a 9.6% chance of 7th and a 14.3% chance of coming 8th. All these league positions could result in European football so there is still so much to play for and just like the other positions, they are also up from the previous estimation.

The highest percentage of Chelsea’s overall finish is 10th place which sits at a 18.9% chance. With numbers swinging in a positive direction of the first time in a while, destiny remains in the hands of Chelsea.
