Chelsea fans will be begging for the international break to return at the earliest possible opportunity as the blues fall way short in a hammering 4-1 defeat at St James’ Park.
With Newcastle having half an eye on Champions League action in the week, today should have been an opportunity that Chelsea should have pushed, instead a lethargic Chelsea walked out come 3pm.
The blues were soon made to pay in the opening 15 minutes as Cucurella’s failed offside trap saw Alexander Isak put the hosts 1-0 up.
Ten minutes later Chelsea found themselves level via a stunning free kick from Raheem Sterling leaving no chance for Nick Pope. Chelsea should have found themselves 2-1 up before half-time but Enzo Fernandez was denied by Pope in what was Chelsea’s most lively phase of the half.
Come the 2nd half it all went downhill, the hosts took the lead on the hour mark through a well worked cross which was met in by Lascelles. The alarming rate of chances being given up from crosses are starting to raise alarm bells amongst the fanbase but fans didn’t have much time to take in and process as 2-1 became 3-1 just 90 seconds later. Thiago Silva this time the culprit and unfortunately isn’t the first time that has been said this season. Joelinton won’t care.
Things got bad to worse for Chelsea as captain Reece James saw himself handed a 2nd bookable offence with a foul on Gordon, Gordon had the final word as he made it 4-1 in the closing stages.
James will now miss the home encounter against Brighton on Sunday as will ex seagull Marc Cucurella after he received his 5th bookable offence.
