As Chelsea prepare for another trip under the arch this weekend, the path to Wembley from next season is changing.

In a recent announcement by The FA, replays in next year’s competition will be removed entirely from the first round onwards. This comes as a massive change as replays have been front of centre of the competitions history.

A couple of seasons ago replays were removed from the 5th round onwards due to fixture congestion but a further review has led to replays being scrapped entirely from the first round proper.

Earlier this season Chelsea had to travel to Villa Park as both teams were locked into a 0-0 draw at Stamford Bridge. From next season the tie would have to be settled on the night.

A statement by the FA said, “From the first round proper, the competition will be played without replays. The current format, which has no replays from the fifth round onwards, has been extended throughout the ‘Competition Proper’ in light of changes to the calendar driven by the expanded UEFA competitions.”

In further develops under the new scheduled planning, no Premier League matches will take place on the weekend of the fourth, fifth, quarter-final stage of the competition and on the cup final weekend itself no matches will take place on the Saturday.
