Battle For Europe -GW36

Share this article:

The battle for Europe is starting to heat up with Chelsea, Manchester United and Newcastle all fighting for 6th and 7th place in the Premier League.

Newcastle took a big step towards a top 6 finish yesterday with their 4-1 victory over relegated threatened Burnley. Yesterday’s result and Chelsea being 3 points behind Man Utd makes today’s game non negotiable. Chelsea simply have to win to keep the European race in the blues hands.

The classification is yet to be clear due to Man Utd’s participation in the FA Cup. Currently 6th place is the only guaranteed European place within reach and if Man Utd were to finish outside the top 7 and lose the FA Cup final then 7th would also become a European place.

Right now 7th isn’t enough for Europe but if Manchester City win the FA Cup then it would be regardless of where Man Utd finish. A draw or defeat to West Ham would almost certainly rule out 6th place which would mean our focus is Europa Conference League.

Remaining fixtures:

Chelsea: (PL34,51pts): WHU (H), NFO (A), BHA (A), BOU (H)

Man Utd fixtures (PL34,54pts): CRY (A), ARS (H), NEW (H), BHA (A)

Newcastle fixtures (PL35,56pts): BHA (H), MUN (A), BRE (A)

A victory for Chelsea today would move the blues to 7th place, a draw would keep us 8th and a defeat would send us 9th (with a game in hand). In short, despite many slip ups against the likes of Burnley and Sheffield United today’s game is massive.
